I started as a fashion designer back in 2014 in the retail industry. Where I mainly designed and followed up production with kids, teens, and women's wear. These were ready to wear garments sold at major retail stores. Most of the garments were T-Shirts, Jeans, Dresses, and Accessories and I gained a lot of experience working on them.
After moving to UAE I started working on traditional Arabic wear brands. This was completely different from what I was doing for the retail market. The design focus was mainly on the beautiful motifs embroidered with beads and colourful threads upon the women’s traditional outfits. I had to work closely with the tailors who did the embroidery, guiding them on the style of beads, threads, and the types of stitches they had to use on the motifs I created. It was an interesting job as I also had to do the creative photography part by myself.
Currently, I am freelancing designing dress designs online for different brands. I also do commissioned illustrations for various brands who contact me via my Instagram account.
AM
First thing in the morning I go through my to-do list and edit/add any necessary changes.
Go through the halfway completed designs, (on Adobe Illustrator) and look for any changes I need to implement.
Work on the measurement charts if necessary according to different outfits designed.
PM
The evening sessions are exclusively for what I love the most. Fashion illustrations.
This is done in a calm environment with good background music so I can focus and do my best on the artwork I am making.
Sometimes, I record the process videos of the illustrations I am making. So, it could be helpful for up and coming fashion students/beginners to learn from.
- Some people think they need to be perfect at fashion illustration to be a good designer. This is not always true. The key point is to know the correct design details in a garment to convert it into a real garment.
- But, if your focus is to become an illustrator, yes you need to become perfect at it. This is something that gets perfect with practice.
- Although a conventional degree is not a 100% requirement in this field if you want to climb the corporate ladder in the retail industry it’s a must.
