Shakaila Forbes-Bell

FASHION PSYCHOLOGIST

Software and Technology

My journey began in 2014 when I commenced my obscure master’s degree in ‘Psychology for Fashion Professionals’. My research focused on consumer behaviour which leaned itself naturally to fashion marketing. I have held marketing roles in brands from Lulu Guinness to the Swatch Group and I’m currently the marketing manager at brand advisory platform Wearisma. Alongside my degree I created my blog ‘Fashion is Psychology’ to provide an insight into this relatively unknown area of Fashion studies. The blog opened me up to collaborate with fashion brands like Next, write for publications like Glamour and Marie Claire, and be featured in Vogue, the Guardian, and many more. My research into multi-cultural marketing has also been published in the Journal of Market Research.

AM

After I work out and meditate I will check and respond to emails and calls for comments.

I then check the news, social media, and google scholar alerts for any new research published.

Then, I’ll check the back end of the blog to make sure it’s running smoothly.

After that, I’ll check in with my intern to see where we are on upcoming content ideas.

I usually spend the morning researching new content ideas and possible opportunities for brand collaborations.

PM

I check Fashion is Psychology’s social media accounts as well as my personal accounts to see how my content is performing.

No day is complete without some writing, even if it's just a paragraph I try to get some form of writing done.

I try to end my working day at 6 pm (although that rarely happens) to spend time with my family/friends and enjoy whatever I’m currently binge-watching at the moment.

I journal at the end of most days to check in on myself and set my intentions for the following day.

  1. Don’t be put off by small people. When I said I wanted to study fashion psychology quite a few people said I would never get a job. I could have been easily put off but instead, I was determined to carve a career out for myself. It's still taking shape but those doubtful comments at the beginning of my career spur me on.
  2. Buy a journal and put it near your bed. It’s easier to forget to make time for yourself when you’re so focused on your career. Putting a journal by your bed is a great way to remember to check in with your feelings - some of which you may have been unconsciously repressing.
  3. Always make time to exercise. I have an invisible illness called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which causes chronic pain in my body so for me, not exercising is not an option (it will only make things worse). Even if you have to go for a short walk the boost of endorphins is a great way to keep you focused on the day ahead.
