I was fortunate enough to start my career at a luxury level with Burberry, where I was a key part of The Burberry Brit Menswear team, working with designers and developers to bring youth-led ranges to market, then I moved into the international mass market with F&F Clothing to get a 360-degree view of the industry and build my skills as a forecaster.
I now consider myself an industry insider who acts as an agent of change, by leading forecasting teams to intuitively identify data-backed fashion, consumer, and socio trends.
As part of my current role, I manage change by delivering macro trend presentations that set the creative direction for each season as well as working collaboratively to drive the implementation of breakthrough ideas.
I have a self-motivated desire to create an open dialogue with the industry-at-large, and this is what has led me to foster authentic connections through mentoring, running workshops, and creating content.
AM
A typical day will involve managing several projects for various departments within the business and depending on what time of the year it is, I will also edit and analyse the seasonal runways from New York to Paris. As part of my role, I also track and report on global socio trends that will affect the business – which can include anything from how to develop content strategies to market to Gen-Z via TikTok to the consumers growing awareness of the fashion industries negative impact on the environment and how it is holding brands accountable – as well as constantly researching images and primary source material to inform the key fashion trends that the business will tap into 12-18 months ahead of the season.
PM
As a forecaster and due to the advent of social media, my day never really ends at 5 pm, as there is always a show to watch, an editorial to view, or a subject to research, so I use my time in the evening to catch up and continue to build on my database of knowledge.
- YOUR VOICE MATTERS. In meetings, on projects, and during reviews, ensure you speak up, so your voice is heard. Let everyone you encounter (whether at work or a networking event) know what you stand for by speaking your mind and demonstrating your knowledge. Always aim to be present, by raising your hand and your voice and sharing your ideas. Let them know you’re in the room and are passionate about what you do.
- SEND THE LADDER DOWN. At a recent Life Talks event, Beyoncé’s Publicist Yvette Noel-Schure talked about sending the ladder back down when you get to the top, and this should be a mantra that you remember throughout your career. The industry is tough enough as it is, so when you get into a senior position, take the opportunity to pay it forward by tapping into your network when it comes time to fill those entry-level vacancies.
- BE AWARE OF THE INTER-SECTIONALITY OF DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES. Know that inspiration and trends can come from anywhere, so make sure you are looking at tech, product design, art, interiors, health, and wellness because that’s where you will start to make the connections that will form future ideas.
