Serge Rocco

CELEBRITY PHOTOGRAPHER

I am originally from Paris, France, and attended San Diego State University’s film school in the 1990s.  I am currently based in Los Angeles, California, and work as a freelance creative content director (real estate, websites, etc.), video editor, and photographer. Being a film buff, I cover, among other things, film celebrity events.

AM

I get my equipment ready: load the camera battery, clean the lens, make sure I have everything ready to go to my location, whereas for a photo or video shoot. Triple-check everything.

I arrive at my location ahead of time to apply the proper camera settings according to the surrounding elements and the general setup (lighting, space, etc.).

I make sure I get as much coverage as I can during the shoot to have as many options as I need in post-production, whereas for a photoshoot, which translates in getting as many angles as possible, or video shoot, which means making sure to get cutaway shots.

PM

I immediately download and save my dailies or photos to my hard drive and start organizing my files. I am then ready to log my clips or edit my photos.

  1. For photography or video production/editing: watch YouTube tutorials about the type of equipment or software you use as well as follow online blogs from professionals to get the best tips. Then experiment. It is the best way to learn your craft.
  2. For photography or video production/editing: Take your camera everywhere and never stop shooting. Produce your projects. The more experience you get on the field, the best because you familiarize yourself with all lighting situations, unexpected problems you may face when on location, and under pressure. Also, you learn what works and doesn’t work in terms of shots and, when it pertains to video production, you unconsciously start thinking like an editor.
  3. For video: create demo reels and upload them to your website. Include the corresponding links in your cover letter, Linkedin profile, and resume. It is the best way to prove you are legitimate, especially if you have your website, and also showcase what you can do to potential clients, including your signature style.
