- TIPS
As an artist, my work explores the versatile manifestations of queer identity. Particularly, how space is created to promote diverse forms of visibility that elude the typical commercialising or sexualising of queer narratives, especially lesbian narratives. I am a published and commissioned photographer with clients including i-D, Vice, AnOther, Man About Town, Vogue, Converse and Getty Images.
My practice straddles commercial and creative production. I recognise fashion media and art media as valuable forms of identity creation and discourse for marginalised communities, rather than simply functions of commerce. I often share my research with others through youth and community workshops.
AM
To be honest, this can vary. If it’s a day when I’m shooting, I’ll have my equipment and film prepared, then leave the house around 8 AM. If I’m not shooting, I’m normally editing photos or coming up with new ideas for shoots.
PM
If I’m shooting, then it might consist of a lot of shooting and conversations with the subjects I’m shooting. If I’m not, it’ll be a day filled with emails or brainstorming ideas for new shoots.
- Don’t give up. The industry is full of rejection for people who don’t fit the idea of the ideal photographer which, for years, has been a white cis male. Just keep going, eventually, you’ll get that yes.
- Even if you’re not shooting for something, try to take a picture every day. Head to the streets and take photos of objects in homes; it keeps your passion alive. Make it an obsession, not a job. If you’re doing photography for money, then you’re already f*cked. Do it because you love it and because you want to take photos, not because you have to.
- Get a mentor. Having mentors in the industry has been the most important part of my growth. Surround yourself with people who are better at what you do than you are.
