Gus Napper

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

I first picked up a camera 6 years ago to start my own fitness Youtube channel. I started filming gym-goers in my gym and created  ‘motivational’ style content for them and quickly realised I had a natural ability to put fitness videos together. One shoot turned into two, two into three, and then took it full time after 6 months. The goal for me was always to work at the top with high-level brands and athletes, so my moves were always pretty quick.

  1. I came up the hard way in videography and content creation before it was cool and only 3/4 people were doing it in the UK fitness scene, so for me, I would say lose the opinion of yourself and remember the work. Easy to get caught up in chasing your own brand instead of providing valuable service to clients. Do the work that gets you paid and referred then the rest will come.
  2. Don’t be afraid to try new things. It’s very rare to create something completely original, as we mostly take ideas that are already out there and run with them ourselves. Take Hollywood for example. They are continually remaking old movie classics. Break out of the box and change things up. When you work hard and build a valuable creative business, you can create anything you want and it’s THAT new creation will be viewed as the new thing.
  3. Don’t be too cool to help. If your client has a strict budget, work within it. If they need you to put in extra travel, make the effort. If they have 7 social media pages, edit versions to cover everything that the client could need when it comes to using your content. You should be providing every single imaginable level of support for your clients as standard, both physically and digitally.
