Renae Taylor

SPECIAL EFFECTS ARTIST

I graduated from Arts University Bournemouth with a degree in Makeup for Media and Performance specialising in special effects makeup but trained in all aspects of makeup and hair. Straight after travelling in the summer I began freelancing. Although being in a studio was my first aim, I was fortunate enough to be involved in projects such as feature and short films, awareness campaigns, editorial work, whilst developing creature work.

My day begins with me checking my emails and then the rest of the day it varies as no days are the same within this field.

Some days, I dedicate myself to finishing a sculpting project, others I’d make and test prosthetics for work I am on, and for future projects in the work.

Other days I’m advancing my skill set within digital creature designing.

  1. Practice practice practice. Always make sure you get out your clay and continue experimenting bringing different injuries to life. Invest in different materials to make wounds as sometimes you may be given a budget that doesn’t cover high-quality grade products but you still need the result to mirror it.
  2. Again, allow yourself to do other work in between your special effects work as sometimes you’ll be away on a job for a while and come back to nothing and so on. Keep an open mind and be positive. Don’t allow opportunities to pass you by but don’t let yourself get taken for granted either.
  3. Within our field CGI is quickly advancing so taking the time to understand digital sculpting work would be a plus in the long run.
