Tabish Khan

ART CRITIC

I graduated in Biomedical Science before starting a career in the corporate energy sector – a career that I still hold. Looking for something to do outside of work I spotted advertisements for exhibitions and started going to them, and eventually writing about them on my blog.

I wanted to find a website that would publish my reviews, so I pitched to the website Londonist, which was relatively young at the time, and now many years later I’m its visual arts editor.

Now my reviews are often mentioned on the same adverts that inspired my journey. It’s a wonderful sight to see my story come full circle.

AM

  • A light breakfast and then grab a cup of coffee and head out to see as many exhibitions as I can.
  • I’ll hit a major museum exhibition to start the day and spend a good few hours getting to grips with it, making notes and thinking how I’ll frame the review once I write it up.
  • A short stop for lunch and then another coffee and back out to exhibitions.

PM

  • I’ll focus on a part of London, say South or East, and then really focus on the galleries in that area. I pick a different part of London each time to ensure I see a wide variety of shows.
  • Once I get back home I’ll get started on writing a review of an exhibition, a roundup of reviews, or a preview of the exhibitions coming up.
  • I’ll share my highlights of the day through social media and line up future posts for the days ahead.
  1. Try lots of different outlets and writing styles. Not all of them will work out but it’s good to experiment with what works well for you.
  2. Diversify so that you can write, present and use different software packages.
  3. If you want to write about art go see as much as you can find. Even the work you don’t like helps train your eye for identifying the art that resonates with you.
