My professional career started in 2016 when I was hired at my first professional tattoo shop. Since then, I have worked in several shops across Europe. As I evolved as an artist, I got more opportunities and offers, so I kept moving. At the moment I’m based in Germany, but I’m doing tours, guest spots, and private sessions all over the world.
2020 has been a bit unusual for me, as I’m sure it has been for everyone. However, things on the job front seem to be looking up, as I just recently had a private tattoo session with footballers Lucas Hernandez and Javi Martinez from FC Bayern München.
AM
First, I set up my workstation and make sure everything is sterile before the shop opens. The next step is consulting with that day’s customer one more time before we start to be sure we are on the same page with the design, final result, sizing, printing design, stenciling, and position on the skin. While the stencil is drying, I do final checks on the workstation, grab another coffee, and get started.
PM
After taking a break, we get back to tattooing. Once the tattoo is finished, we wait for the tattooed part of the skin to calm down while I make sure I clean my workstation for the next day. The last step of the day is taking photos and videos of the finished piece. All design preparation is drawn out during work hours, whether it’s in the early morning or late evening.
- The best option is art school, but if you have a great deal of discipline there are all types of online resources that can help you learn to draw. If you take your drawing seriously, you just might get good enough to achieve your goal without the help of art school.
- Once your drawing is on a satisfactory level, you will need to create a portfolio of your best drawings. When creating your portfolio, make sure it’s diverse. You want each of your drawings to stand out from the last, rather than looking too similar.
- Networking is everything. Visit shops for potential apprenticeships, join tattoo-related groups, and do everything else you can to make yourself known in the tattoo community. You could even try to get a job as a shop manager just to get your foot in the door.
