Matt Davies

ART TEACHER

Traditionally artists have taught to support themselves financially. I am a practicing artist and teacher. I have a Fine Arts degree and Secondary art teaching qualification and currently divide my time between an independent art school and state school, teaching children from 5 + to adults. I feel privileged to teach a subject I am passionate about.

AM

Luckily in my role as an art specialist, I have full autonomy in the curriculum I deliver. My mornings are spent teaching a variety of skills for my youngest students.

Resources need to be prepared before each class. During lessons, I always provide a demonstration of the techniques I want my young artists to learn.

Daily routines/duties include:

Studio/classroom management

Planning lessons/schemes of work

Liaising with support staff

PM

Teaching continues into the afternoon.

Three afternoons/evenings a week I deliver classes at an independent art school.

Every Monday is devoted to my practice. I spend this day uninterrupted in my studio painting.

  1. As an art teacher, I believe you should be making your own art. It is important to keep developing your skills to ensure you consistently deliver high-quality lessons for your students. You can use your teaching practice to inspire your own work.
  2. Be engaged in your students. Your role is to inspire.
  3. Keep abreast of current exhibitions and emerging artists. It is important for students to be introduced to a range of traditional and contemporary artists.
