- TIPS
In 2010 I founded AJM Management, a fresh-faced music company specialising in Artist Management and Development. Since then the company has grown and worked with many established artists and
industry professionals. In my role as an artist manager, I have built solid foundations for many up and coming artists and seen them progress to new levels of success. With international touring, label signings, publishing signings, and collaborations with the biggest promoters in the world, myself and the team at AJM are ready to find and work with the next breakthrough talent.
AM
– At 9 am have a cuppa and check emails – respond to anything urgent. – Check social media for the latest industry news.
– A&R to find new talent.
– A&R our roster’s latest tracks.
– Attend any meetings in the diary.
PM
– After lunch head out for some fresh air and have a long walk.
– Catch up with our artists – discuss plans and upcoming projects.
– Organise release campaigns, press, schedules, music videos – whatever is coming up next.
– Clock-off at 5 pm.
– Continue to keep an eye on emails for the rest of the day or attend whatever event is in the diary for that day (it’s really a 24/7 job).
- Invest in building a strong network within the music industry. Attend local gigs, find local recording studios, get to know who is who in your local area. When you’ve done this, start to branch out to other cities and make sure people know who you are.
- Be prepared for long hours and long days. Being a manager isn’t a typical 9-5 job. You will need to be available to go to events, have meetings at unsociable hours with artists and industry, and be on hand to deal with anything urgent no matter what hour of the day. Not to mention touring, which is a whole different ball game!
- My last tip is…ENJOY IT. Working as a manager is one of the hardest jobs in the industry but it is also one of the most rewarding. When you’re at a festival or in the studio with one of your artists, take a moment to really appreciate the job you do. Those moments will stay with you through the tough times.
