I got my first camera at the age of 6 which sparked my love of making images. Of course, this didn’t last long as shooting film was expensive for my parents. 1995: Studied Industrial Design which included photography as a practical subject but did not include any formal training.
Skip ahead to 2003: Bought a Nikon D70 & got back into photography thanks to the start of the digital photography era.
2013: Gave up an office job working as a technical professional for Nikon Europe to follow my creative dream of being a full-time photographer. The rest is hard work, chasing dreams and determination.
There’s no regular day in the life of a freelance photographer/lighting director/assistant. It changes every day, which it’s part of the appeal, but also a huge challenge.
Set life is demanding & challenging in so many ways, but it is what I thrive on. I can’t imagine life without it.
Downs days are never really down days either. You always need to be looking for work, develop new projects & fight creative lows. You can’t force creativity, yet somehow I always feel the pressure to be creative and/or productive.
I love ending my days watching a movie (which is also a huge source of inspiration for me) and a glass of wine to help switch off the overactive brain.
- Shoot all the time and as much as possible. Especially when starting out. Shoot anything and everything. You’ll soon find out what resonates with you and what does not.
- Don’t worry about your gear, use what you have. I love shooting with disposable film cameras.
- Assist and collaborate as much as possible. Always stay open to learning and developing.
